Video over IP: a logical enhancement of your alarm system
A short background on alarm systems
As a result of increased crime activity level caused by burglary and
aggressive attempts to steel money or goods, companies are since the late 80’s obliged to insure themselves against
these crimes and have the need to install an alarm installation. This solution was easy to deploy and effective in its use. Infrared detectors were detecting movements in the areas of a building or office and generating an alarm. The installation furthermore generated a loud alarm to scare away people. Directly after detecting movements the alarm installation dialed out to an alarm center that directly informed the police about the alarm that was detected. The police did respond on the alarm and moved to the premises. |

The key holder or owner of the building was able to go to the office or building and knew that it was safe to go as the police was available or on its way as well. The concept itself works fine but its success was to large that efficiency went down over time. |

As a result of the increased number of installations the number of alarm detections the number of detections did grow along. The police is therefore no longer able to respond on an alarm as the number of needless alarms, the increased workload for the police as well as the shortage of police staff. |

The logical answer: video verification
It is well known that our eyes have the best interpretating function of the human body. The term “seeing is believing” is based upon this ability. Continuous development of technology makes it possible today to transport high quality video on an efficient, secure and cost-effective way over long distances. This new technology makes it possible to support people to remotely view live video for a variety of functionality.
Deployment of network cameras, video servers, DVR’s and Network Video Recorders make it possible to utilize the IP
networks and offer the ability to view live video from remote locations. This works for Alarm- or Control Room environments
as well, offering the ability to present streams from security cameras in the Alarm Center.
So when an alarm installation triggers an event or movement, the operator can remotely look at the remote location via a
secure Wide Area Network (WAN), such as ISDN, xDSL and cable networks. It offers the ability to both look at live images as
well as retrieve recorded video. This creates the ability for the Alarm Center to verify the alarm and judge if it a true
alarm or false. This leads to improved effectively and a higher priority for the follow up.
Availability of affordable video solutions offer the ability to use this solution from small to medium companies as well
as for
enterprise companies, retail areas and industrial areas. The Alarm Center becomes a logical enhancement of your alarm- and
video surveillance
system improving your safety and protecting your properties and investments.
